Yep, that is the best way to do it.

It differs from tank to tank, and how long you had the filter unused.
For a wild guess, I'd say about a month and a half.

just took it out of my two foot tank

Make sure to keep it running.
Put it in a bucket and add some ammonia, or fish food, and test the water.
This way it will speed your cycle. (I guess to maybe 2-3 weeks)

What size tank are you getting?

got a three foot tank

Well roughly around 2 weeks I would say.
It also helps if you use the old substrate- and plants.

thanks i have used the plants as well as the bog wood from the two foot tank as well thanks for your help
