I've done the salt bath, frequent water changes, and kept the water at a warm temperature for the past 5 days. My betta has been acting happy and active - blowing bubble nests, flaring, and swimming around with his fins open wide.

This morning he was fine - the finrot seemed to have stopped (or so I thought!) so now the tips of the tailfin are slightly red rather than black as it was last week. I just came home now and saw a chunk of the tail missing!

Is this something to be alarmed about? When treating a fish for finrot, does the rot on the fin have to fall off before it could get better or is this a sign that it's spreading even more and that further treatment is needed?

Thanks everyone! - Kari.

It doesn't necessarily have to happen, but it does.
I came in to work last week to find Amos with a huge hunk of his tail just missing - not floating or layin in the tank anywhere, and i never did find it.
It's now starting to grow back, tho.
He doesn't seem to miss it.

Sometimes when they have finrot they will actually bite on the affected fins...if they can reach them. I suppose the fin rot must not feel too comfy at some point...that's why they do it. Several of mine have done that, which sometimes can make it worse...that's why I lopped off 2 of mines tails (I cut off the dead parts..not their whole tail mind you) that had it...because they wouldn't leave it alone and were actaully making it worse (they kept biting at it and shredding the fins closer and closer to the body).
