"oil Slick"...

Afternoon all,

Just wanted some general advice, over the past few days our fluval edge seems to have developed something similar to an oil slick over the surface of the water. It's not too major and I'm thinking it might be to do with the oils in fish food? Is it anything to worry about? It's normally gone after our routine water changes but I was wondering if theres anything we can do to prevent it reoccuring? I have cleaned the filter sponge in tank water (tenderly as it's still a relatively new tank)but it doesn't seem to have helped much

Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Try increasing the surface tension with an airstone or adjusting filter output. I've had the "oil slick" before, it's nothing to be worried about. Now if you find a duck in it, then you have problems .....sorry, bad humor.

Its nothing to worry about, its just the water becoming old and requires changing or a strong(er) current on top of the water.

as said above, it's quite common. Usually due to foods with high protein levels. If the water is aggitated enough it should clear, or you could try reducing the amount of protein based foods you are feeding.
