Today I went to my Fish store...(where I work)...and guess what I saw!!!Three awsome altums  !!!And these puppies were not cheep try 100$ each and still not full grown! I picked out the best looking and prettiest out of the three and bought him...Of course I got an imployey discount...it only cost me 34$ hahaha now you see the benifits of working at a good fish store!I bought the altum but did not take him home yet!Because I need to get his tank ready!Of course my other comrads that work there nicely put a sign on the tank that reads: "Biggest and Prettiest ALTUM ANGELFISH is not for sale".....And of course they will know the diffrences between my baby and the other altums in there. I was woundering if just one Altum would need a bigger tank than a 60 gallon. Would my 60 be a good tank for him? Also his name is Napolion and he is so cute!!!I love this fish!!
My boss hogged all the full grown adult altums for him self and said he was wanting to try and breed them! The juviniles were the only ones for sale.. He had five adults in the breeding basement.

Whats an altum?

Don't you still have a puffer that needs rehoming?

Don't mean to be rude, just asking.

Some googling revealed this Angel Fish as an Altum ? :dunno:

Yeah.

I meant like, whats so special about them? I don't mean to be naive, I've only ever heard of Koi, Marbled and single coloured ones.

Altums are a much bigger and more rare species of angelfish. They are also a lot more difficult to breed.

You must have gotten that at cost I am assuming? I will have to avoid your pet shop in the future if your mark up is that much! Although if you get interesting and semi-rare fish in that would be a draw! :D Congrats on the altum!

Thank you :D

60 gallon should be fine for Altums. They're a great fish! I've seen some for sale, also, more expensive than your average angel, but $35 for a baby is a bit cheaper than at your store :p

Only problem is that i've heard they're almost more picky about water quality than Discus :(

Ahh, if i could only afford a group of 6 Altums....

That is because true altums are all wild caught, thus the high price tag. You really have to keep the pH in the 6.5 range with very soft water. Here is a link to a profile. I think they are gorgeous fish. I have 4 angels and 2 of them have the same stripes as an altum. I actually fell in love with angelfish from the one in my API Master Test Kit box.

Well my oh my do we have some people here that don't know the mighty altum a.k.a deep angelfish? I thought you people knew everything!! I am planing on getting two more altums to be buddies with the one I have...And Fella you should really read topics more carefully because I clearly stated that I left the fish THERE..... And I will be picking him up when I have his tank ready!!!!

Please, I wasn't being rude, I just thought you had a puffer that would need rehoming/moving to his own new tank before you bought this fish. Please don't tell me to read topics more carefully.

 Sweet buy, Kopix Nation. I saw a couple of full grown (I would assume) P. altums at the Memphis Zoo Aquarium. They were the size of dinner plates.

When you get the tank remember, taller is better with angels. I am sure you know that.

Watch your water params, altums are notoriously picky. Even at a bargain, I wouldn't want you to end up with a dead angel.

You might want to look into culturing live food, if you don't already. If they are wild caught, and I'd bet the retail price from your store for one that they are, live food will go over better than trying to shove flakes or pellets down their gullet. Just a thought.

CONGRATS! I am so jealous. :fun:

I was hoping you guys could answer some of my questions on this fish.... I just wanted to know somethings that my fish library (it is at my house lol buy more than fish at a pet store!!) is not telling my about keeping these fish.... It is really annoying because only two out of my five fish books says anything on them. I have been researching this speacies like crazy!! Ahh but the problem with online research is who to beleave? Some altum topics state that they are hard fish to care for and some say they are easy no problem!! What to beleave????
