Hi guys,

I'm off on one of my crazy ideas again.

My room is being redecorated, and I'm currently bidding on this desk on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.u...9#ht_500wt_1287

I've asked the seller and the top of the desk is 42 x 6 inches. I've had the crazy idea of getting a tank custom built to fit this size about 6 inches tall (so 42x6x6 inches), and housing shrimp and maybe a betta if it'd be big enough. Possibly even crabs or something, though I've done next to no research into whether it's feasible.

So, I have several questions.

Where do you go to get a tank custom made? I don't trust my siliconing skills and after a previous leaking tank disaster I'm not going to take that risk. Anyone have any ideas how much I'd be looking to pay for a tank that size? Also, does the desk look like it'd take that weight? By my reckoning it'd be just under 25 litres if it was six inches tall. I can put additional wood underneath to help support the weight if need be.

Secondly, this tank would be going right next to my main tank. Is there anything I could do to somehow link these two tanks so that less equipment is required?

I made a post about this in the hardware section but haven't had any replies yet. On Amazon they have a solar charger for a 12V battery which has some very good reviews. Say I were to fix this to the side of my main tank (which has lights on for several hours a day), could I use it to power some equipment? I know shrimp are fine at room temperature, but could I use it to power some LED strips, a filter etc?

Any other points I might not have thought about are also welcome.

Is it really just 6inches wide? Looks wider to me, obviously you need to wait till you get it to get the accurate measurements as sometimes the sellers can get it a little wrong..

Theres a few places to get a custom tank, delivery is the biggest prob but as its just 6" tall it will be cheaper as it doesnt require a very thick glass (the taller the thicker glass needed) so prob just 6mm or something. I know of nd aquatics, wharf aquatics, ac aquatics and im not sure but if you ask in your lfs clearseal can make a custom one.

I wouldnt link the filtering or anything just in case of any diseases if im honest. Oh and the desk would deff support 25 litres, you might be best with at least 8" though for substrate etc

That sounds like a long and incredibly thin tank... o_O
Although when I've mentioned my custom tank's dimensions to a mall petshop, they were like "There is no tank with those dimensions.", when I told them that it's custom made, they said that I won't be able to find a lid for it. Well, there were custom lid makers, but my dad and a friend made my tank lid so... got that too.

I got my custom made tank from the market though, had to pay some money in advance and then the rest when it was done. It's nicely done, for a fish tank not made by a company.

I asked the seller and they said six inches, though this isn't something I'm planning on doing right away. Just doing some research for the future.

The height of the tank is negotiable. I guess 8 inches might be better. To be honest I'm not even sure whether fish/shrimp are the way to go. I've been considering things like land based crabs, semi aquatic crabs, stick insects, newts, all sorts. Anything suitable to live in a glass box that size really! Since it would be next to my main tank, it would be nice to have something that would look a little different.

I've sent a message to that eBay seller for a quote on the tank, so hopefully I'll get an idea of what sort of money I'd be looking at to do this.

I'd get mantises but then they'd just eat each other -.-
How about land snails? (though you might need a lid...)
