Odd Behaviour

My betta Raj has just started to do something odd and I'm not sure if I should be worried or not.
At night, he's been darting up to the top and splashing out. He's not jumping, just making a lot of noise when he gets to the surface.
He acts totally fine during the day but late at night after the lights have been off for a while.. he starts to do this.
I'm thinking while he's sleeping.. he's waiting too long to come up to get his breath of air maybe? But if that's it, why's he doing it all of a sudden?
He's never done this before and it's worrying me.

As I said, he acts like he usually does during the day, eats, flares, swims around etc etc etc....

There's nothing suspicious on him. His coloring looks fine, water stats are fine.. there's aeration in the tank, it's heated... everything is perfect except for his sudden weird behaviour.

I have most of my Betta in my room and after the lights go out i often here them slpashing about at the surface, i don't know what they are doing or why, all i know is when ever i turn the light back on the all look innocent

Try putting a night light near them and that should give them the impression that it is moonlight and allow you to view them, I have night lights on in my fish house.

The tank is on my computer desk so I can see him fine b/c of the monitor light.

He only did this once last night while I was still awake. I saw him dart up to the top, do the splash thing then he went back down to the bottom and 'slept' more And then he was totally fine the rest of the night... *shrugs* The night before though, he was doing it a bunch.

I'm gonna try to get them some more plants for the tank so if it is him rushing to the surface for his air.. then hopefully a larger plant will have spots to let him rest closer to the surface so he won't have to do that.
