I just bought a dwarf gourami yesterday and acclimatised and released him into my tank. He has however been behaving rather wierdly for a gourami, wizzing up and down the glass like a lunatic and generally being the opposite of what a peaceful gourami should be. None of the otehr fish have taken any notice of him so i dont think hes being stressed. Could he still be acclimatising after the move?

Good day Yabby,..... Most commercial breeders produce their fish in concrete ponds in greenhouse effect tunnels where the temperatures are controlled. When these fish are "weaned" to glass aquariums, they are totally out of sorts (seeing the world horizontally through the glass) and obviously, makes them nervous.....

I think in your case, the breeder got an order for (for instance) 20 fish, and he only had 19 "weaned" fish available, so to make up the rest of his order, he caught a "wild" one from the pond to make up his consignment...... You have purchased that one and you are in the process of "weaning" this fish.... Only start worrying if this lasts for longer than about 8 days.....

If he was acting normally in the store, it defenitely has to do with your tanks environment, like adjusting too quickly from the store, a PH imbalance, or high levels of chemicals such as ammonia or nitrite.

If he was acting like that in the store it could be
a) Something wrong with him mentally, like not being adjusted to tanks, as previously said, or being recently brought to the store, or
b) An illness or parasite.

Also, did anything unusual happen today or yesterday?

So it would be helpful if you could give us that information.

Had the same problem with my dwarf gourami. He settled down for a bit after, now he is dead. Haven't a clue why either. Water stats are great.

water's fine ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate negligible. There is a yabby in the tank which could be stressing him. I think he may have had a run in with him because one of his whiskers has been shoretened. do they grow back? i'll remove the crayfish and see if that changes anything. Also added some floating plants to see if that makes him feel more secure. Thanks for all your help...

I was wondering if whiskers grew back too, my dwarf recently injured himself and his whisker on one side is about 2 thirds the original length and split in half.
And all from one decoration.
(Don't worry, I'm treating him with half doses of melafix)
