I am in the midst of planning my change over to Cichlids, most probably Malawi's but am having trouble making a choice between Lava Rock and Ocean Rock.

Only thing pushing me towards the Ocean rock is the fact that it's Cheaper and I'm hoping to get a deal on it as a friend works for a Marine Aquarium Importer..

At the moment my LFS is charging £2.19 Kilo for Ocean Rock & £3.95 Kilo for Lava Rock not sure if this is good either lol

What are people's thought's between the Two type??

Any advice would be gratefully recieved :)

Thanks,

Lawrence

Could you claify what they are selling as ocean rock? Is it live rock, dead coral, or a holey limestone? If it's anything but life rock it should be fine. Lava rock is good too, just depends on the look you are going for. You can get rock much cheaper from a landscaping or garden store though, just avoid anything with obviouse metal deposits or rust on the outside.

It's not live marine rock just the holey type.

Ok, what you are looking at is limestone, in the US it's often sold as Texas Holey Rock since a lot of it is found in Texas. It's a great rock for Malawis since it will help buffer the water.
