The only thing I would worry about is that when humans eat oatmeal it absorbs water and swells up in your stomach. If that were to happen to the fish why might get bloated etc.
Wouldn't this be solved by making sure that the oatmeal was saturated before putting it in the tank - there must be a point where it's absorbed as much water as it can...? Just a thought.

Not meaning to hijack, but talking about stuff expanding, what about feeding fish with rice? Again, soaked well so it's not going to absorb any more water. The whole plant = food logic works (I accept that that's pretty flawed logic, but still...). Anyone with experience here?

Its the same with rice, and mashed potato and oatmeal. You cook mashed potato, boiling the potatoes and all. It still absorbs water in your stomach. Thre is no "saturation" point as such. This rule also applies for oatmeal and rice. Notice when you eat these foods you feel fuller 1/2 hour after eating than right away.....well thats why.

As for its effect on fish....I am not sure.

i just realized something. if my water has chlorine in it, and i make oatmeal with it, how am i supposed to make it so it doesnt have chlorine. i dont want to eat water conditioner. do you think its the same as people injesting chlorine?

I think that oatmeal should be fine for the fish... not sure that it's very nutritious, but I guess you could add some liquid vitamin drops to it or something. :)

Yes, but by that logic, wood is a plant (tree), people eat plants, therefore people can eat wood... which is not true, since we don't have the enzymes to break down wood ... some animals do, though.

Actually, we do eat wood... where do you think cinnamon comes from? :p

Well about 24 hours later all my fish seem fine from consuming their evening meal of oats last night.

Once the oats have soaked for any length of time they will not get any bigger, so the size they consume will be the size it is in there stomach I would not worry about the oats expanding as long as they have been properly soaked.

Good to hear!

I think cooking removes the chlorine from the water, so dechlorinating it isn't an issue.

Termites are able to eat wood because of a protist that lives in their digestive tract called Trichonympha, which humans lack. We eat wood, yes, but in small amounts and we cannot digest it. The fish may not be able to digest any of the nutrients from the oatmeal, if they don't posses proper enzymes, protists or bacteria in their digestive systems. It doesn't seem to hurt them, but I wouldn't make it a staple in their diet until I've researched it's nutritional value.

I don't think oatmeal would hurt the fish. The fine particals might cause fouling in the water.
Back in the early part of the last century,( Yes I was there ) guys would blend allmost any cereal product with shrimp or fish, bake it or let it dry. "homemade fishfood ". Probably this is basicly what we feed out of the little cans we buy today.

Does anyone here make DIY fishfood?

I always wondered how you could make fish flakes... probably mash it all up into a gooey paste, smear it real thin on a cookie sheet and bake it until it's crumbly. I imagine your kitchen would smell pretty rank after making a batch, though.
