Hi

Living room seems to be too cold over night and my Nutrafin unit hasn't produced a single bubble in over 48 hours!
:-(

I restarted it last night because I thought maybe I'd followed the instructions wrong, I read through George's pinned threads first, and decided to up the temp of the water a bit in the canister. Then I moved it on top of the tank (can't clip outside because of the lid) and shortened the tubing in case that was a problem. Still nothing.

Considering moving the container inside the tank so it's hooked on the inside and sits in the water, in the hope that this would help if keep at 25c at least but am concerned that it isn't water tight and might leak.

One thing, I don't have table (ie granulated) sugar so used caster sugar instead - that wouldn't be a problem would it?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Now I'm off to buy some yeast and bi carb soda to make George's recipe.

Ami

Edit: 5.55pm - still no bubbles and have had the heating on for hours to warm the room up. Would really appreciate some help with this problem guys. Tx

Hi Ami

Make sure the yeast is in date and dont mix it with water that is too hot or you will kill the yeast, not sure about castor sugar never tried that.

I usually premix the yeast in a cup with an inch or two of tepid hot water, i just stir this up first of all and then add it to the sugar and tepid ho water that i will have allready prepared, it usually starts producing co2 almost instantly (if you look at it closely you will see tiny bubbles appear at the surface) and will begin to bubble once the air in the hoseline has been pushed through which usually only takes about 20-30 minutes.

Id recommend you make up another mix and try again although the cold will not help, but it has never been a problem when i make up a new mix as the water i use is allready tepid.

Hi all,

I have never had an issue with caster sugar yeast mixes. I have had one mix last six weeks before!

I think my water was too hot with the second mix because I'd thought it'd been too cold before! :*)

Also, not entirely sure that the yeast that came with the Nutrafin Unit was in date because there was a lot of dust on the box and it looks different to those currently on sale from Aquatics Online - was probably in the store for a while.

How long is your hoseline and where is your unit placed? Mine is currently on top of the tank and the hose is about 1m long, so I don't think that is the problem.

I thought this was going to be sooooo easy too!

Hi Sub - guess that's not the problem then. I didn't think that it could be, but you never know!

Will try to get some yeast tomorrow as I failed misreably yesterday and then try again. Any particular recommendation on the yeast front anyone?

Do you use the yeast that came with the system? I found out that the yeast that comes with the system is not very good.
