Going to get Some jewels and convicts and maybe some rainbows how many of each could i have? cheers in a rio 240

Both Jewels and convicts are very aggressive when spawning, so if you get pairs there could be trouble. Your stocking plan is do-able but only just. If you get both of these Cichlids make sure you break up the sight line across the tank. I am not a fan of Africans and Americans in the same tank, but it does work for some. If I were you, I would get a pair of Convicts with 6-8 Rainbows as dithers and maybe a Plec and leave it at that in a 240.

cheers for helping the guy at the fish shop said that the jewels would be ok with the cons :S what plec would go well and what other fish could i have instead of the rainbows? something aggressive and colorful ? please help

Jewels are old worlds, Convicts are new worlds.
Don't mix old world and new world.
Convicts breed often.
Convicts get very agressive when they breed
Jewels are agressive when they breed.
Don't mix two over agressive fish

Lets just say by what I just stated, It is not a good idea to mix the two of them.

i have convicts at the moment so i know all about them and ye there from two different areas but can get along in tanks depending on size and how its decorated and was thinking of just getting female jewels.

Like I said, I don't like to mix Cichlids from different areas, but thats not to say the fish shop guy is wrong. It can be done, for example I have a close friend who has Carpinte, Severum, and Jewels in his tank and it works for him. Rainbows as dithers are a great fish because they are fast and seldom get caught by aggressive Cichlids. But there are a few different ways you could go down. Its not for me to say what to get as this is very much a personal choice. If you list fish you like, research that list, and anything confuses you or you are unsure, come back to this thread and I will try to help you. Also I am sure there are many others on here only to happy to pass on some of their knowledge as well. As far a plecs go, forget the common plec as eventually it will out grow a 240. There are many plecs that you can consider that stay within the size for your tank.

Convicts are too agressive for any other cichlid, espically during breeding. By me saying they are too agressive, I mean them in a pair. I asked for some tank mates, as I was thinking about getting some, and I was told that they are too agressive for many tankmantes. Wish I could help you but I can't.

Do not have the taxas cichlids in the tank! You can't house much with reeding convcts, they are just too agressive.

I don't think that your tank is suited for any more fish. I hate it when people ask for information and then say well, you guys are wrong I am right. No offence, but Please take our advice. It will benifit you much.

that is what i have in my tank at the moment, i am getting a new 4ft tank and asking how many i can have in it with other fish.

About 50 gallons? Uhhh you might be able to house some quick moving dithers, like giant danios. I don't know about any other cichlids for the mix. A Texas is NOT suited for a tank that big either. NEither are Jewels. You might be able to have a krib, not sure about the agression though.

Sorry for being mean to you, but convicts are hard to work around.

ye its just over 50 uk G why is a texas not suited for a tan that big or jewels? i thought they would be being they grow up 2 12" and the jewels abit smaller? and these 2 fish are the ones the shop guy said to get with them.

NEVER trust the lfs. Texas are SUPER agressive, more agressive than mating convicts. They are usually kept in species only tanks. And you are NEVER supposed to mix africans and new worlds, and jewls are old worlds, and convicts are new world. Just not a good combonation. See this goes back to we give you advice, but you deny it, because you think that wht you know is better.
