Number Of Fish Help

NEVER trust the lfs. Texas are SUPER agressive, more agressive than mating convicts. They are usually kept in species only tanks. And you are NEVER supposed to mix africans and new worlds, and jewls are old worlds, and convicts are new world. Just not a good combonation. See this goes back to we give you advice, but you deny it, because you think that wht you know is better.

have u had either of these fish? and i asked why cant texas cichlids go in a big tank? and same with jewels? and im not saying im right im saying what an expert said

Argument needs to stop guy's it helps no one.

Confish your questions are all valid and betta boy most of your info is reliable but is not going by experience, just read facts.

As i understand it is generally said that it is not a good idea to mix old and new world cichlids, BUT it has been done.

The thing with any cichlid is to take into account not just it's size but also it's behaviour, most are aggressive especially when breeding and are very terrotorial.

Therefore mixing certain cichlids is a bad idea as fighting will usually occur and one may be killed.

Just my two cents

No fighting eh :good:

right ok can i just establish what fish you already have that will be going into the 240L ?

i have 6 convicts but obv not going to move them all in probably just 2 and a blue crayfish (named larry) cheers 4 the interest, also was wondering if i did get jewels i knw there not from same area but then again they will be tank bred so will they know any different? but if i just got males or just females to stop breeding aggression

If your after a mixed cichlid community, then yes you are best sticking to same sex cichlids or even better IMO single specimens,

In a 240L you could get away with 4-5 smaller cichlids, with dithers and catfish/oddballs.
I would look at other cichlids like Firemouths or t.ellioti, or t.aureus, Blue Acara
dithers could be Rainbows or Giant Danios

Actually what cichlids are available to you?

The cray may also be in trouble if kept with cichlids long term as sooner or later one of the cichlids will successfully kill and eat it, In the wild crayfish is on the menu of most cichlids

just to go over your previous list;

jewels - single specimen would work IMO, however pairs or a group would dominate the tank
texas - too big and too aggressive, in a 240L you would end up with the texas and nothing else
rams - would be killed by convicts or jewels or anything similar, in the wild rams live with neons
Rainbow - again a little too peaceful to be kept with your preferred fish
krib - might work but most likely would end in fatalities

cheers 4 the advice ye i like the look of the t.ellioti, or t.aureus, but like u asked what is available, well i have seen firemouths, jewels, texas but i this is just from one aquarium shop ive still got to visit more. so do you think i could have 2 cons and maybe jewel on it own with some firemouths? and some dithers? and im guessing you dont mean rainbow cichlids as dithers ? :S and my cray is pretty big my full sized con even when breeding doest try it with him lol

He means rainbowfish like the melanotaenia genus (there are other genera though) with fish like boeseman, goyder river, kutubu lake, neon blue and red irian rainbows to name a few.

i thought so i love the look of the boesemani ones :p

yep thats what i meant :good:

I'd personally go with two to three female convicts, a single Jewel, a Firemouth (or variant) five Boesmani rainbows and the cray

that sounds like a perfect setup, but i really want to keep my male con as he was the first fish i got and his fully grown :( but ye cheers for your help (y)

If you really want the Jewels, and don't want ot take our advise, then okay, it can be done, but is not reccomended. Which are you more concerened about, how pretty your tank looks, or the well-being of the fish?

Firemouths are agressive, so are convicts, and so are jewels. The agression levels would be high. I wouldn't want to go with anyother cichlids, MAYBE some dither fish. It weould depend on the personality of the fish. In glenbo's 100USg tank, a male krib tried to pick a fight with a firemouth and the firemouth tore him to shreds, and I mean shreds. THat shows how agressive they are. If you could rehome 4 of your convicts, and keep the breeding pair in the smaller tank, that would be fine, if you absolutely have to have the convicts. Oh and if you thing a lfs is an expert, then we are super extrodorinary experts. IF he is an expert we are an expert that knows how to talk to aliens and memorised all of pi. Just a comparison for ya.

ye i think the setup would be too aggressive, so my lfs expert said to lower the temperature to below 20 to chill them out, also might add a brown floater instead of the dither fish what do you think?.

Never heard of "Brown Floater" But how about this stocking?

20 Neon tetra, or other schooling fish, mix and match if you like
1 pair of Apistogramma, or rams
1-2 Bristlenose Plecos
1 pair of Keyholes

no being there is no aggressive fish and convicts

ok how about 1 pair of convicts, 1 jewel cichlid, 1 crayfish and 7 Giant Danios and 1 senegal Bichir
