I bought a setup from a pet store for my daughter which included a 29 gallon tank, filter, heater and a pump.I don't understand what the pump is for --does it work in co-ordination with the filter--What is its use?

Well, if the filter is an undergravel filter then the pump should be used for that. But if the filter is an internal removabal one then you could use the pump for airstones or bubble walls.
