Noisy Filter

I bought a second hand external filter, it is Eheim 2013. So far i have used quite a lot external filters, all very nice, esp Eheim ones are very quiet.

but this one is extremly noisy, i can not stand for it. i opened it a few times, try to find out where the problem is, but i can not find it.

it work porperly, it is empty when it comes, so i filled it with all kind media, fine and coarse sponge, i did not leave much gap at the bottom , as well as the top.

filled with water, it is a little old, but worked fine.

However, it sounds like thousands bee flying in the room, i can not stand for it.


where is the problem? or should i just get rid of it?

um does it have the containers inside, you know trays for the media or did you just cram the cylinder full of media?
second did you put hoses on correct way and fill fully?
third does it actually work as a filter should and just make a awful noise, either the motor's knackered or maybe have you tried tilting the filter at a angle and see what that does, maybe trapped air, where did you buy it?was it working when you went to see it?

it is second hand, i bought from ebay, the seller said it works fine b4. and it is not my first time bought filters from ebay now.

it does not have any containers, so i put the heavily media at the bottom, then put all kind of sponge on top

i think i put it correctly, as it works fine. the water come in from the bottom of the filter, and come out from the top of it.

i shaked the filter, no difference, i know if you have air trapped in filter, when you shake it will make noise, all my other filters do. but this is not the case here.
this one just constantly "woo, woo, woo" like thousands bee

take the impeller out and clean it, and make sure its seated properly when you put it back in...

my belief is you need the containers inside with the media in, this then creates the flow around inside the container, maybe its not working right because of this fact, maybe something is stuck in the impeller

that might be true, i will try whether i can find some trays. as for the impeller, how can i clean it? it is kinda a solid unit, i can not open it.

Not familiar with that model, but not all eheims come with trays, for instance, my 2217 doesnt, its just sponges placed one on top of the other.

The impellor should 'unlock' from the base, its just a case of turning it, then it pulls out.
