I have been really interested in getting an air stone for my tank, not for any reason other than the fact that I love the effect they give. However, on reading through the Juwel manual which came with my tank it says that airstones should not be added under any circumstances because it effects the strength of the sealant. I was just wondering if anybody could qualify this as being true or if it is just Juwel covering themselves. Also, how does having an airstone in the tank effect the sealant anyway? thanks :)

I have no idea, surely, if anything, the filter pumping water round the tank would cause more pressure on the sealent?

Its not a problem, add one if you wish

The fact that Juwel state that this voids the warranty is ludicrous, I've never heard anything so ridiculous.

I would say it just juwel trying to get around something that they don't have to accept responsibility for anything. Juwel are cowboys. I have a juwel and I'd never buy one again.

Thanks guys, I think I'll look into getting one then. I read something on another website about some kind of alternative to an air stone that juwel make which could perhaps be why they advise against them? In the hope that people might buy their product instead...that's my only thought.

See what I mean? Cowboys. Not enough money in it for an airstone for them but we think you should buy this..... This is just one more reason why I wouldn't buy a juwel. All their parts are expensive too.

They make some of the best tanks in the hobby though, the other equipment is just average however.

There are so many types, with so many bases, that its probably nearly impossible to tell but; (In case your interested!)

Some sealants are designed to be used under water/oil/any other fluid required. If they are in prolonged contact with oxygen they dry out and perish. Essentially they seal because they don't fully set, they remain malible and seal with the pressure of the fluid they are sealing against, almost like semi-set putty.

Having said this, you tank doesn't turn up in your house full of water, and the above mentioned sealant doesn't provide any structural support either, it literally just inhibits fluid loss.

Probably way out, so i would go with the cowboy theory..

Yeah, i'm leaning towards them squeezing money out of people but that is an interesting theory and would make a lot of sense. I think i'm going to try to research this a little more and i'll update this topic if i find anything else out :)

It would make sense if the tank turned up at your house full. I would imagine the transit time to be enough to completely perish the above mentioned seals unless they are submerged, so i dont see how it could ever be an option on a consumor tank. Cant say that it might not be in use in places like Sealife centres though, but again, we dont have several thousand gallon tanks in our houses!

This sounds interesting...i personally wouldn't call Juwel 'cowboys', the do make the best quality commercial tanks. There was a algyrythem flying around the net giving a run through on how many men and how many hours it takes to make a juwel tank compared to others in the market. It was interesting to see how long juwel take to make one tank.

Kelly-jo, why not email Gordon from Juwel, he's the head of customer services for the UK and he's brilliant at returning emails within an hour or 2. He'll let you know the reason juwel are saying this.

I don't doubt that they're good tanks, its the equiptment. What other tank company would make a light fitting and unless you change the screw caps every six months the warranty is void. It seems the light units are made to fail and they have no intention of changing the unit. You cannot get into it unless you cut the unit to repair it. All their prices of thing are way over the top.

I don't mind paying extra for something that works well and as with anything you buy it can go wrong but the way they seem to back out of everything is a disgrace.

i've had about 4 Juwel tanks now, no problems with any.

I've also had amazing customer service - needed a few small bits for the filter unit, 3 days later they arrived free of charge in the post

they are prone (or were) to splitting at the seals. but my guess is they have had a Claim, probably from the US. so give a coverall, to cover their back. mind you, it could be an inherent weakness in the "silicone" they use. but i doubt they would admit either.

but. with unreliable lights (vastly expensive to replace), dodgy Heaters (even after a change of makers) and filters they say, are only good for lightly stocked planted tanks! (which can be kept with no filter) not sure they are up with the best. stands though, whilst not top notch, are quite good.

Great idea, I think I might do that.
