no idea why this is but my nitrates have gone sky high... however all seems ok in the tank.
The only thing I can see which will've done this is fertiliser as I tested it 2 days before and nitrite was 0ppm, now after adding the fertiliser its 2

Not unless your fertiliser is actually an antibiotic. You didn't say, but I'm assuming your ammonia reading is still 0? I can't see that something killed the N-bacs, but not the A-bacs.
Probably you added too many drops to the water sample, and it's a dodgy test. Give it another test and see what it says.

ammonia is 0ppm, i have retested and it is blue - 0ppm... as you said... added too many drops... was a little preoccupied when doing it so i may well've added 10 instead...
