Nitrite Bacteria

i know i did a mistake and got too many fish too early...but i was impatient
my nitrite was fluctuating from 0-0.25 for the first 5 days...once i took my three goldfish out and put 11 other fish (mentioned on my signature) my nitrate started doubling every day...
as the nitrite spiked to 1.0 i had to buy something to bring the nitrite down...i bought TetraAqua Bactozym
i put the pill in my filter and it is supposedly going to introduce 20 million bacteria in my tank which will break down my nitrite...i will then have to add these pills untill my nitrite is at a stable level-0
i have checked this product on the internet and it supposedly speeds up the process of cycling.

my question is that why doesent anyone use a product like this that speeds up the pace of cycling?

most of these product contin dead bacteria. some claim the bacteria are asleep but they usually don't wake up in the tank.

all in all, these products are expensive and useless if everything is done in order

yea but we will see...i am convinced this stuff is working as i checked nitrite now, and since yesterday it already has dropped half of what it was before

i have also seen that my water has turned clearer than it was yesterday... it seems much healthier and my fish seem more happy...i think that this bactozym really did help my tank...
has anyone else had experiences with products like bactozym

If Bactozyme is the tablet stuff then I know I've had loads of complaints from customers who used it (usually bought from Dobbies) and ended up with dead fish and tonnes of ammonia.

Not tested it properly though. Im testing Tetra Safestart right now (a newer/better version of Bactozyme).

yeah but i never heard of dobbies. tetra is a better well known brand which, you would expect it to work.
and what do you mean three-fingers that you are testing tetra safestart right ow...on one of ure own tanks or just on a un-cycled tank?

your tank had already been cycled though, meaning bacteria were present and needed time to colonise. in a mature tank, it's usually a matter of hours or days to adapt.

perhaps the product worked, but i've never had any luck with similar products and the general consensus is they don't work. the times they did work are so little and apart it could well be a coincidence.

What you need to get rid of nitrite is water changes, not to spend money on products whiich are unnecessary and mostly useless.

Get rid of the Bactozyme and start changing 75% of the water every day. Problem solved.

Completely agree with BTT. Just putting -more- stuff into the tank often is an experiment using your fish's lives as the test. Rolling up your sleeves and performing gravel-clean-water-changes is such a solid, well-known solution and has extra benefits, both refreshing the calcium, trace iron and perhaps other mineral content and of course removing other things that are in excess, not just the nitrite.

I've got a test going in a thread. Testing ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels each day after dosing ammonia into an uncycled tank and adding Safestart. See here: http/www.fishforums.net/index.php?s=&amp...t&p=2522525

Just about to test now actually, 48 hours after Safestart.
