ok, facts first........

Well matured tank.....ie 4 years (at least)
Planted
Temp...28*f
Ammonia....0.0 Nitrite....0.0 Ph.....7
20% twice weekly water changes

Now, here's the thing. My tap water contains 40 ppm of nitrate :angry: so does my tank.......continously :rolleyes:

I appreciate that this level is of no great concern but.............

What I was thinking, is there any way of lowering the nitrate levels other than RO water?
 
Well constructed planted set ups can lower nitrates, as too can deep sand beds, nitrate reactors and growing algae turfs.

In reality 40ppm is nothing at all to worry about. The scientific literature seems to point to 400ppm being a safe level.
