Nitrate Sponges

ok got a new tank and i asked the guy about the nitrogen cycle coz everyone talks about it and he said as a beginner you don't need to worry about that and pointed out the the tank and filter sytem i got has a nitrate sponge init and tht this will sort all that out.

and what the hell is this sponge gna do ?

i dont no if he was just leading me on but wanted to know what you guys thought?

Nothing beats water changes for bringing nitrates down. If those sponges worked I would be using them. You do need to cycle your tank, unless you want to do 50% water changes daily for as long as you have it running.

Sheesh, maybe after learning the cycling process your second lesson to learn is that the LFS people are pretty hit and miss. And this one is definately a miss, since cycling should be the very first thing that is needed to know so that the first fish dont die of ammonia and nitrite poisoning. Notice, not nitrate poisoning.

Be sure to read that post about cycling and ask about anything you don't understand. There are very experienced fishkeepers on here willing to answer virtually any question you might have. If you listen to these guys, your fish will live long, happy, healthy full lives.
