Hi everyone,
I have a neon tetra which has a nipped fin. I know who the culprit was and he has been removed. The tetra is able to swim ok and doesn't seem to be under any other stress. However, the edge of the nipped fin is white and I was wondering if this is normal, ie a scab. Or is this some sign of desease onset by the stress of the injury. Any advice would be welcome. The white is only along the edge that was nipped and nowhere else on any of the other fins or other fish.
Many thanks
Ian

It sounds like the beginning of fin rot. this is a bacterial infection.
I would treat with a course of melafix

Of the fish I've kept, they always seem to have a white mark along the fin when they've been nipped and it has rarely developed into fin rot, so I personally would leave it a few days and see what happens.

I have a neon with exactly the same. I don't think it's anything to worry about, just where the fin has been nipped.

Thanks for all your comments. The fins don't look like fin rot to me from what I remember when I had fish a few years back. But at the same time I have never had nipped fins before, so I was unsure. But I have to agree with the leave it and see senario. However I will keep a close eye on all of the fish just to make sure.
