i mean ive had him for a year and had no heater and he was fine

You might try putting a heater to give him a little extra warmth, that might perk him up. Also he might just be getting old or even bored if you never change up his tank. Or you could try giving him some new food like frozen bloodworms/brine shrimp. Hope that helps!

you probably should have a heater depending on where you live. it would help perk him up. feeding a variety of foods will most lielky help too. how often do you change his water? smaller, more frequent water changes sometimes help.
considering he's notthe livliest sort, i think you shold re-consider breeding him as i saw in a different post. the stress might be too much. its a lot of work for the fish, especially for the dad!
