At present I have a female Nic in my comm tank waiting for an upgrade (or two) and she keeps laying eggs, nothing too problematic at the moment with the other fish she just claims a coconut in the corne and keeps to her self. However this is the second time she has done this now and straight after water change her and one of my "baby" HRP males went properly at it full on mouth locking flaring and biting - no damage done to either but it was pretty intense and she has just gone straight back to digging. So Im guessing that I an a certain amount of danger of getting hybrids pretty soon..... I mean I bet nic x hrp would look awesome but I dont want to go down that route so going to get rid of the males pretty soon.

Now onto the question - what do you think is the minimum tank size for a group of nics? Im thinking of doing a pair with intent to breed and sell the fry on to stores got plenty around here that will take them. But yeah if it was in a slight community set up around a 4 foot tank what do you think would be manageable in there with them? Is 4 foot big enough? Im thinking 4x2x2 I know male nics get pretty big so that would probs be minimum IMO but what do you think?

Also just to add any members from HULL (I know there are a fair few on here now!) If you want a male HRP I have 3 that I need to move and would rather them go to decent homes via this forum than just going to frisbies or ferrybridge.

I saw a HUGE Nic at the fish shop the other day I was shocked at how big they can get. This guy was a solid 7" not very pretty. HE was old and beat up poor guy. In that same tank there was a huge gold Severum 8" with one messed up eye.

Anyways after seeing that Beats Nic at the LFS I would say don't get one. yet I am sure it takes some time for them to get that big. Also if she is mean now if she had a mate you would have 2 bully fish. IMO its best to give a pair their own tank.

I would just let her lay her eggs and don't get her a mate right now. Maybe when you get the big tank.

Yeah sorry I meant for an idea to get a seperate tank for the pair of them to breed in - what do you reckon 75g?

Just for the pair only yeah 75 gal Min would work I think. But I have never had these guys. I just saw this Beast of a Nic at the LFS it was almost as big as the mature Gold severum.
