NFL 2025

@anewbie[ I had to ask my husband what you meant by Bears Ben's shirt on, lol. I'd think you were a Pats or Titans fan for some reason ;) Maybe just a Chicago hot dog fan...or not🌭 I'm not sure about pickles...

Sanders did look better until he got his finger hurt. Still Bills are pretty good,. so Browns made a good effort. Maybe next year? Browns fans have a private room at our sports bar & we've heard more cheering from them this season than maybe all other seasons combined. So, we're happy for you & them. Always good to have a possibility of better year next year

I used to watch a lot of football, But then the NFL started making the game less watchable, imo. The rules changes have degraded the game making it less enjoyable to watch. Then the true greed of the NFL kicked in. Yesterday the games were on Netflix and Prime. This makes them not watchable by folks who do not have these pay services.

Today's 1st game is on Peacock, more pay to watch. I do not use any streaming services at all. We do have Prime which has the third game which we get because my brother is a top tier customer at CitiBank and he gets $200 in perks for streaming use. So he gets prime for a big discount or maybe it is free. I piggy back it on the household rules they have. But I shop on Amazon and I mostly use this perk for free delivery on my orders. I refuse to watch the baseball of football games broadcast on Prime as they take those games away from the folks who cannot afford to pay for premium stuff. They used to be on free broadcast TV. The second game is on the NFL Network. So I can see it but others may not be able to without the right cable package or App.

So, I have generally have no football unless it is on the cable networks or the broadcast ones we already pay for as part of our triple play service from FIOS. But that is OK by me. The quality of the game has made it much less appealing to me. In the 80s I bet football with a bookie in NYC. Today betting is legal and I do not bet on any sports at all. The tie-ins between the gambling outfits and pro sports - has opened sports to fixing on a level never before possible. The recent basketball scandal is probably only the tip of the iceberg.

I began watching pro football in the late 1960s when I lived in the Washington, D.C. area. I became a redskins fan as a result. I seem to remember my first Superbowl game was the 3rd one. I have seen them all since and have never seen a single half-time show. I may not even tune in this year :(

I agree but then I don't... :dunno:

What gets me is that everyone complains about the NFL being on Prime and other streams but no one seemed bothered when Monday Night Football, or was it Thursday Night Football, was broadcast only through the NFL Network which is also an extra cost on cable.

It also has to be remembered that games that are streamed are still accessible on local networks if the game involves a local team.

Still, I DO have an issue with games being streamed via Netflix as they are not a a true network as they do archived shows/movies. Outfits such as Peacock are what I would consider networks as they do live streaming and have as much right, under NFL broadcasting contracts, to bid for the ability to show.

Do I like it? No I can't say that I do, but it is the way of today's TV viewing.

Yeah, I felt bad for people without cable when ESPN started having games. Now there's ESPN+, Netflix, etc. It's cheaper to go to our sports bar for a few games this year that we didn't get. But our close sports bar is closing soon, 2nd of our locals in several years :( We'll have to go next week & hope our fellow fans will come for a last game. The owner said they find a new location...somewhere. Next year our Eagles won't be on our tv as much (sniffle)

Makes me think of way back when before I ditched my ex and left Ohio. In this case it was in the early-mid 1980's and a lot of Browns' games were not broadcast where I lived just outside of Cleveland due to not being sold out. I happened to have acquired a very old Emerson TV that was either the first or second year they produced. LOL! Tall, thin, cabinet with a round B&W screen and ALL original tubes. The thing actually still worked. Amazed me but I could pull in Browns games that I couldn't get locally from a station in southern Ohio. The thing didn't even have a 'rabbit ears' antenna. It just had a single pull stick pullout antenna. My ex couldn't stand the thing as it didn't 'match' the rest of the furniture and she put it out for trash pickup when I was at work. Lord only knows what the thing was actually worth...

Sadly she was really good at throwing out things that I considered important and two other items come to mind...
  • One was a wide leather belt. She hated when the back curled a bit and, again, put it out in the trash when I was at work. I didn't care much about the leather but she didn't even bother to take off the buckle which had been authenticated by the Cleveland History Museum as a Civil War Calvary buckle from the North. The thing even had the original owner's name and address etched in the back of the buckle that could still be easily read.
  • Then there was a pair of jeans... In 1974, after I go out of the Navy, I hitch hiked around the US for a year. The jeans were my 'traveling pants' and whenever a hole appeared I got a patch from where I was at. LOL! The thing ended up more patches than denim. Didn't fit anymore but held a LOT of memories. Once again, out in the trash when I'm at work.

No wonder she's your ex. We might heavily suggest (or nag a bit) that the other get rid of something, but neither would throw out anything not our own. Maybe we can get a start on downsizing after football is over...this not our forever house.

Oh, those were some of the more minor things...

Browns actually beat the Steelers today 13-6. Once again the defense was awesome. Makes for a last week's Steelers/Ravens match-up big as the winner of that game wins the division.

With one game left Miles Garrett still needs one sack against the Bengals to set the single season record for sacks passing Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt. Each Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt are tied for the record with 22.5 sacks. Garrett has 22.

Steelers likely could have won the game and clinched the division but Arron Rogers played the game like the only thing he cared about was not being the QB to give Garrett the record. There sort of seems to be a 'thing' between Garrett and Rogers as Garrett has never sacked him. Still Garrett was a factor with several hard pressures. Actually I could only listen to the game radio broadcast while having NFL Red Zone on but muted. I'm sure that the game will be shown on the NFL Network and I'll watch but it would seem that Rogers should have been called for at least 2, possibly 3, intentional groundings to avoid a sack but the officials would not call. Since intentional grounding is a 10 yard penalty and loss of down, in a normal game, Rogers would accept a 5 yard sack rather than 10 yards and loss of down.

It just, at times, just seemed a strange game performance as to Rogers. :dunno:

<edit>
Can someone explain the end of the Bills/Eagles game?
  1. Why, when it was an official review as to a Bills' TD, was there a 10 second runoff? Or did I take it wrong and it was due to being a team challenge? No, that can't be the case as you can't challenge in the last two minutes of a half...
  2. Why in the world did the Bills NOT kick the extra point to tie the game sending to overtime? This is happening more and more in, both, NFL and college and I don't get it. Since the chances of kicking the extra point has much more chance than the 2-point conversion... KICK THE DANGED BALL AND GO OVERTIME.

We weren't sure about the 10 second runoff either. We've discussed & maybe, since after review Bills did not get a TD, the clock would have been running if the play been had called correctly. Bills could have called their last time out didn't want to leave any time for the Eagles to get more than 1 play after the kickoff, whether the Bills got 1 or 2 points after TD. A stupid bet as our kicker hasn't been very accurate lately. The old rule is away games, go for a tie & OT; home games go for the win in regulation.

It was also strange that the clock would start at the official's whistle...but he never did that. Lots of clock oddities at the end. 18 seconds left, TD try but no score. So they took off 10, but added 1 for when the runner was ruled down.

I have to say I'm emotionally exhausted from this game. Missed calls, terrible weather & us not able to do anything the 2nd half (not the 1st time we've only played well half a game, eek). Of course I'm glad we won!

Mayfield and Company are leading the Panthers by 16 to 7 with 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Winner of this game may make the playoffs. Loser goes home till next year.

Important game is on right now… 49ers vs seahawks. Both teams will be in the playoffs but the winner of this game will get a first round bye…which is a huge advantage.

Not all that sure about a bye being an advantage unless you have important players that are hurt a bit and a week off can help.

Personally, if playing well, I would want to keep playing.
