Newborn Human Infant and fishes

I agree , my boys have always been around aquariums , as long as when children get older they keep hands out .
I hear ya there! My 2yr old thinks splashing is fun and the 10g nano is right at his height if he's kneeling on his toy box that's right in front of it. I've finally got him out of that habit. The inhabitants of my FW are very used to his not so gentle taps :X

It's actually recommended to have a fish tank in a baby's room  The sound of the water mimics the womb, calming them. Many doctors suggest getting a humidifier for babies, the air is really dry for brand new lungs so the humidity is an added bonus of fish :)

well, it wasnt really the tanks that smell, it was the spilled water that i never cleaned up. i didnt clean my room until we moved the tanks, which was for about half a year

Just be sure to wash your hands well after having them in the tank (since you'll undoubtedly be touching your baby a lot) and clean up any water spills right away. We had a full tank when our oldest was born and we never had any trouble with it.

Well, like I always say, if you find plants growing in your carpet or the cracks in your floor, it's time to move, not clean...

Anyways, yup, unless the kid is actually in the tank, I can't see how it could be bad.

Hi..here's a physicians input. I can't think of any risk to the baby from a microbial or fungal point of view by having an aquarium in the house. However, you still need to take the same precautions about baby proofing once the baby turns into a mobile toddler, ie, hanging electrical cords, pulling or knocking a small tank over, keeping fish medications out of reach or choking on small pieces of gravel/rocks etc. Most infections occur in marine situations (vibrio eg), however, it's not inconceivable that anyone handling a dirty filter media with an open cut on their handcould (but probabably unlikely) get a local infection. I hope this helps. SH

Thanks all! Being a first time dad just wanted to cover my bases and make sure that a 10g fish tank would not posse a health risk.

And no I don't think little "jr Jediag" will be swimming in the tank!

Hey..congrats on being a first time dad...I am too..er..well....times 2 ( I still consider myself a new dad). Good luck with the diapers..remember, changing diapers is not a job, it's a doody!!!. SH

The only other porblem that there could be is your baby chucking it's rattle at the tank and smashing it, we had a lady come into the shop and her toddler had smashed the tank with his rattle.

Well, if you're Chinese, having a tank in the bedroom (the baby's or yours) is a no-no acc. to feng shui... :)

I grew up with tanks. The only thing that happened to me is my mom took a nap and I (18m) followed the cat across the top of the tank (Glass) and it broke and in I went. So if you keep an eye out there should be no problem. This was a lack of parenting not a tank issue. With all this said I have a 2 and 3 yr old and they love our tank! I had my hubby build a stand that has a bar across the front top of the tank so if my kids tried to pull up on the tank it won't crash . I say go for it !!! Your baby will love it !!
