Newbie - Fluval 1 Plus To Much?

Hello,

This is my first post and very much a novice to keeping fish. I have a 14 litre tank with two fancy goldfish and a live plant. I want to change the filter that came with the tank as its really noisy and a pain basically (Elite Mini) and quite tempted to get a Fluval 1 plus filter. I see on the box it says up to 45 litres but will this be ok for my little tank?

yes, filters are always overated, it will be perfect.

The filter will be fine but the tank is way too small for fancy goldfish.

Goldfish are very misunderstood, mainly through years of fairgrounds etc giving them away as prizes (which is now illegal) and people keeping them in bowls.

A fancy goldfish need 20 US gallons for the first fish then an additional 10 US gallons per extra fancy goldfish, therefore for two you need a 30 gallon tank which is about 100L more than what they are currently in. They are also huge waste producers and require excellent filtration.

Fancy goldfish usually reach anywhere between 6-10" in length, with the biggest on record growing to 17" long.

Thanks for the help guys. glad the filter will be ok and this one is driving me mental!

I was told by the pet shop when I bought them (quite a big chain) that two would be fine in that tank and now feel quite mortified that they should be in a bigger one and not very happy with the advice given in the shop now.

Oh, stop being so sarcastic! *slaps wolf playfully*

But, yeah; anyways, that tank, is, like, well.... *waaaay* too small for goldfish; if you get a heater for it ('Hydor Mini Heater' is good, and 'Tetra 2 - 15 gallon' is also good; I've used both), and keep the filter, and plant it up quite nicely, you could get a Betta for it! One Betta and nothing else; maybe an apple snail or a couple of shrimp but definitely no tank mates other than that. ;

Agree, this would make a nice single betta tank, with heater.

Its sad, the goldfish internal organs grow too large for the body of the fish when its boxed too small, so its just a terrible thing to do to them as I understand it.
