right i have a little idea on how plants survive but iv bought a cupple in the past they last a few month then start to die out, do they only survive with clay/soil or is they some treatment you can add to the water without affecting my fish?

There are several good supplements you can add to the water, plus there's the CO2 route. You could start with some Seachem Flourish. I'm sure others will chime in soon.

Many folks with planted tanks inject carbon dioxide in their tanks. I can't afford the system, so I don't. But lots of other people do. Take a trip in the Planted Tank forums. I'm sure there's discussion on it there. Or click here.
