In a nut shell you cycle a tank adding ammonia so that there is 5ppm in the tank and leaving it be until the readings drop to 0-1. Then adding enough ammonia again to top back to 3-4. By doing this you are promoting the nitrogen cycle which starts with ammonia which converts to nitrite and then to nitrate which is the end product. What you are aiming for is that your filter can process 4-5ppm within 12 hrs so when you add 12 hrs later ammonia and nitrite readings will be 0. Having done this for a week and getting 0 readings after every 12 hr test your ready to add fish.

When you add fish they produce ammonia and this will be converted within a good time to nitrate which won't harm the fish like ammonia or nitrite. Nitrate in large doses will however harm the fish but this is sorted by carrying out frequent water changes.

Also at the top of the forum is a calculator which enables you to see how much ammonia in ml you need for your tank volume to take the ammonia to 4-5 ppm
