New To The Fish Busines...help!

Yeah thats fine.. Same stuff applies really.. I was just saying that if coldwater fish dont work out and you put them back in the pond (they should be because they are going to get too big for that tank) then you can get some shrimp/snails..

o yes forgot about that, apparently I was Reading on here that cherry shrimps are good for begginers. How long are you cycling your tank for?

My tank and filter is second hand, My cousin had her betta in it but her heater failed and killed hers.. so she hates the tank now, lol! Im going to get a new heater, maybe a new filter if i can afford it.. it depends if i have the old filter or not.

So roughly how long do you have to cycle the tank for before putting tropical fish into the tank

Its extremely unpredictable how long it takes to get a filter to cycle, but on average we like to say 3 to 6 weeks, although it can take two months sometimes if you have a couple setbacks. This is for a "completely from scratch" fishless cycle. Sometimes people are successful at finding another hobbyist (there are donor lists on the forum here) who will contribute some mature media (piece of their filter sponge loaded with bacteria) from their filter or, rarely, a LFS that will give or sell some and this will greatly speed up the cycle.

That ammonia, plus ammonia from the fish respiration (yes, they give off ammonia when they breathe!)

Sorry but respirations isn't breating, thats ventilation. Respiration is the process of converting components for energy. Around 90% of ammoinia is excreated through solid wastes.

Yes, you are correct on both counts. The percentage of ammonia from ventilation is small compared to the main wastes. I use the term "breathing" in the "New to the hobby" forum as a language term that I hope will draw beginners into ideas presented in the paragraph. :)
