Hey Everyone,
Ive taken a look at some of the posts on shrimps, and cant quite get the answer Im wanting. I recently bought some cherry shrimp for a community tank, and while they are thriving... Id like very much to start a Shrimp only tank, with the exception of a nerite. So heres the tank I have in mind to use (I have this one lying around) : http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-Crescent-Aquarium-Kit-5-Gallon/dp/B00324X5L2 . It is 5 gl or just shy of 19 liters.

It does have an internal filter, but im concerned with this possibly sucking up the shrimps (does have flow control). So im willing to replace the filter. Any specific suggestions for a new filter?

How many shrimp should be ideal for this tank (May want them to breed)?

I plan to use a dark substrate, but im not sure if I should do sand, or dark pebbles? Which would be best?

I plan to make this planted. With Mosses, Java ferns, Anbias Nanas, maybe even cryptos? Have any other easy to care for plants that they might love?

In regards to the plants, is the lighting adequate? (Ive had success with anbias Nanas but thats it.) If not, any suggestions that may fit this tank? Any suggestions for soil/substrate prep?

Any other tips/suggestions?

Thanks!

Moss is the best plant for shrimp tanks. The other plants you said would be good too. But you really need moss for baby shrimp. I have some African water fern. I love thus plant it's very easy to grow in a low tech shrimp tank.

The tank you want would be good for cherry shrimp. As a shrimp only tank. I personally would leave the snail out as the nerite can produce a lot of waste. Just keep shrimp only. Maybe some rams horn snails.

I would start with 6 shrimp or more. They will breed cherry shrimp are the gateway shrimp. They are easy to breed and will with no help.

As for substrate cherry shrimp are not picky. I like ecocompleat and shrimp substrate like this. It's also good for plant growth. I would not use sand for shrimp and plants.
