New To Marine's Taking Over A Friends Tank

At the end of next month i am moving with my partner into a friends bungalow, and they have a marine tank which i am going to be taking over, I currently have a tropical tank so i have some idea of things but there is so much more to learn about marine tanks and their contents and upkeep.

At the moment it has a dogface puffer fish which looks fairly young and another fish i havent really been able to see much of as it tends to keep hidden away, all i managed to see was that it was dark and disc like in shape.

There are apparently some crabs, and there is a black spikey sea urchin.

There is a sea anemone as well which my partner and i feel could be dead, it looks like a blob of yellow playdough over the top of some coral and it doesnt look like its holding its shape as it looks like set candle wax.

Unfortunately i dont have any pictures of it but will update with some when i can.

Does anyone have any advice on the dog faced puffer? Apparently they are quite friendly with humans, what about other fish?

Or the Urchin and the maybe dead anemone?

I want to have some sort of idea what i can stock with the puffer.

Next time i am there i will take some measurements of the tank to work out the water capacity and i should be shown how to use the testing equipment soon so i can get an idea of what the parameters are like.

any advice in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!

We really need a bit more info before we can make suggestions on stocking we need the size of the tank, as you pointed out.

The dog face puffer is a gorgeous fish but is not reef safe and so shouldn't be in with corals or an anemone. But again, will need to see some photos to let you know what you have in your tank

Okay i have been to the new place again and taken some pictures here we go...

This was the anemone, i checked with the owner and apparently it did have bits coming off it.

The tank is quite a good size tank, it is a cleair BS 1000 i think!

Unfortunately i couldnt find the puffer but identified the other fish as a tang

I have read they need a lot of light so i dont think it has had the amount it needs. However we have left the light on now and are back there on sat so hopefully it might pick up a bit more i guess

Oh no, you read wrong, they do not need a lot of light they need a good amount of flow though.

Toadstools are well known for sulking after they have been moved, so just leave him alone and he will come out in his own good time. Try aiming the powerhead a few inches above him

yep ive had them look like that before and theyve opened up and are like they were before

as seffie said not alot of light but the flow really is important ive found too much they sulk to little flow they sulk also so gotta get it inbetween ime

We have replaced the lights that were needed, i am not too sure how to reposition all of the power heads just yet i will have a look a bit more when i have a bit more time.

The tank looks even better with the lights i will get a new picture up and keep you updated on the progress of the toadstool coming back to life/opening up.
