heres the story.... I just quit college and decided to move home. I have had every pet you can think of but havent had fish in years. I decided to get a fish tank but the HOA won't allow anyone in my area to own a fish tank. I decided to move out of home and get my own apartment and buy a fish tank. I ended up getting a what is said to be a 50 gallon tank.

I cannot decide what to fill it with... I am getting a 105 at xmas

I was thinking 2 oscars and a clown knife

but I also really want something that lights up the room and looks amazing but is very cheap as I am so broke from moving out.

anyone have an idea on what they think the gallon size is on this tank?

the owner said he spent around 800 after the filters and stand and such

The easiest way I know to figure tank volume in US gallons is to get the volume in cubic feet and multiply the result by 7.5. The real value is like 7.48 but we are talking about getting close enough to give the tank an approximate volume. The glass thickness will throw the calculation off more than the round off.

Welcome the TFF jdub2K5,

Stocking starts off with some very personal choices and usually what we suggest to members is that they make notes on fish they see at the LFS and like and then "look the fish species up" here on TFF in the species-specific sections and read about them. Then, if that doesn't eliminate the species for you, post up the ideas here in your thread and have people comment.

If you're a beginner (apologies if not!) its often not clear yet that it will take from 3 weeks to 3 months perhaps to "prepare your biological filter" (also called fishless cycling) and that during this time you will have lots of chances for good discussions about your future stocking list. It turns out this is great because it takes time to plan out how many of what size fish can live safely in a given tank and also what species are compatible with each other and can survive in the type water available to you from your tap.

Oscars and CKFs are pretty radical and special fish, so with starting thoughts like that you'll especially want to take some time and learn some of the basics if necessary. The members here are great and different ones will come along with all different types of expertise.

Good luck,
~~waterdrop~~
ps. be sure to begin reading the pinned articles at the top of the forum and other peoples threads too!
