New To Bettas; Possible Fin Rot?

Please help me determine if my 4-yr-old daughter's new Betta has fin rot. We've had him for about 2 months and I notice that the edges of his fins are white. I'm not sure if it's his colorig or fin rot. I'm new to fish. Please help me.

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

That's a very pretty betta you've got there who obviously does have white edging on his fins naturally. I can't really tell from the pictures if there is any white fuzz anywhere on the fins or if they appear shredded/torn at all but if you see either of those signs then you are dealing with fin rot. Otherwise, it's just his colour

If you still aren't sure try to post a bigger more zoomed in picture using a photo hosting site like photobucket or flicker so I can see it better.

mmm I can't really see any problems in the picture there. Have you noticed a change in the shape of his fins?

Not really. The only thing i noticed is the long fin underneath, seems to look a little tiny bit tattered at the very tip. But this is our first Betta, actually our first fish. I never thought I'd get attached to a fish. I'm not even sure what type of Betta he is.

well then I wouldn't worry. He does have white edging on his fins just as part of his colouration but if you think there may be a problem developing then do some daily or every second day water changes to keep his water super clean and it usually will heal up on it's own if it's not very bad.

If I had to guess I'd say he was a halfmoon betta. I'm not sure what his colouration is called but there are a couple of threads on here that talk about betta colours...

Either way he's a very pretty boy!!

Yep, that's my boy He's a halfmoon and his colour is called mustard gas

He is the prettiest fish I have ever seen! Seriously.

I think our Betta may have had fin rot when we bought him and now his fins are healing. I was looking at a picture if when we first got him and his fins were much shorter, more raggity looking and less white. Now it seems like they have healed and are much longer and fuller. That could be possible, right? Either way, I know he's much happier and healthier.

That's completely possible! They are often not kept in the best conditions in the fish shop and if you stick around you 'll see people complaining all the time about getting sick fish from their LFS. It's just part of the game unfortunately!

Your Betta fish is so beautiful!!!!! May I please ask you how many times you feed daily, and the quantity of food you feed him, and what type of food you feed him, ( flakes, pellets, worms, etc,) because i am new to fishkeeping too and I don't know how much to feed him, and what size tank is that?I have a blue veiltail male Betta fish named Midnight, maybe if I feed him the same food you do, he'll be as beautiful and as healthy as your fish.

Thanks. I'm new to this too! So I'm learning as I go. Right now I have him in a small 2 gallon tank. He has fin rot so I'm doing daily water changes and doing a fishless cycle of his new 5 gallon tank that I plan on putting him in once it's ready. I don't feed him anything special, just the pellet food that came with his tank. It's called Aqueon Betta Food and it's little pellets. I feed him once a day and I put only put one or two pellets in the tank at a time until he eats it. I continue to feed him like this for about 2-3 minutes and then I stop. It helps keep the food from sinking to the bottom before he can eat it. Am I over feeding him or under feeding him? I have no clue. But that's the way the instruction pamplet told to feed him.

Thank you for reading my comment, 4-5 pellets per day should be good for a Betta of that size. Bettafix works very good for fin rot, my Betta had fin rot and I used it on the water and he healed, it doesn't leave any film or the surface of the water and it doesn't make the water a different color, you can buy it at petco, that's where I got it from. Thanks
