New Tank

Hi all,

I'm in the process of trying to figure out and narrow down the choices of tanks out there, I want to buy my mum a new tank for her b-day and have around 500-600 max to play with, I know its not a huge amount but thats as far as I can stretch.

So, I need atleast a minumum of 260L to a max of 300L, groundspace is important as we have a few big bottom dwellers and i'd prefer a slightly longer and wider aquarium rather than height, and the lighting must be T5...oh and I don't really want to buy second hand, i.e, ebay or something as I've got no transport of my own.

It's a tight budget for what I want, just wondered if anyone has any good suggestions as to reasonsable online shops and also maybe aquariums I might want to steer clear of etc. Also any thoughts, good or bad as to the bull nose aquariums, i like the idea of them but they look huge, as in like half a meter taller than I am!

500-600 what, as you state it's not a huge amount? If it's £'s then that's a tidy sum for a pressy for mum!

I know it's not within your 260-300 litre range BUT a Fluval Roma 240 (240 litres of course) is a great size tank and there are some good deals out there. I got mine from seapets - UK website - for £300. This included fluval 305 filter, a good fluval heater (can't remember name), 2x lights (different types, one brings out colours in fish and the other aids plant growth), 34kg dorset pea gravel, background (ok but I would recommend buying your own), fish net, water conditioner, cycle stuff for aiding bacteria growth, thermometer and lastly a siphon. There may be more but I think I covered all of it. The tank is a great buy and I'm very pleased with mine. The filter hoses come up through the base from the cabinet (also included) and are easily hidden by a plant or some wood.

Seeing as all this is £300 you could easily give your mum some money to buy fish and/or decor if you want to.

As I said, a great buy and I'm very pleased with mine.

AmazonFTW - I spent a long time looking at the fluval roma 240, really really nice tank, was completely tempted when I saw it, but decided even though I loved it, I wanted bigger for our clown loach Colin and his brothers

Well, I'll admit it was ebay after all, I bought a 300L bull nose aquarium in walnut, seller was rated as a top rated seller with something like 18000+ feed back, so hopefully I won't be let down. Tank dimensions are 1200 x 401 x 690mm, 8mm thick glass and comes with T5 lighting, downside its only 2 39W T5, but i guess you cant ask for everything when it cost 339. Although it wasn't branded and I do like going for my brand names, such as fluval, eheim etc I decided to take a risk and hope that we'll be pleased.

Rest of the money will be spent on some easy to care for plants, more wood and some plant substrate and eventually an upgrade in filter, possibly fluval 305.

Gonna have to wait 10 weeks for it but I dont mind it gives me time to research and prepare for the accessories!

What do you reckon - have i made a wise choice..lol

Glad you liked the Fluval, but yes, a bit small for clown loaches. I would suggest maybe stepping up and buying a Fluval 405 - because better filtration is always better for your fish.

I agree with the filtration, Im not sure if we'll stick with fluval or if i'll look into an eheim, both have never done me any wrong but the fluval is a complete pain in the bum to get started after you've cleaned it, well unless I manually suck the water through, which is sometimes not pleasant.

Im sure fatty Colin will like it not so sure about mum, she's worried about her floor and the extra weight ha!
