just came back from the tip with a tank, filter, stand and heater all for free!

i have some questions for you guys about setting it up:

1: the dimensions are: its hexagonal. 41cm across the top (widest points), 48cm tall and each payne of glass is 14cm wide (across the top), could somebosy pease tell me the capacity.

2: it came with a fluval 2 plus filter. i am currently putting it in boiling water to help clean it. it has 2 spungy medias and one in the middle which is white and very dense. can anyone tell me what they are so i can get new ones?

3: i was planning on putting the filter in my existing tank (which is still also cycling) to help develop some bacteria before i put it in the new tank. can anybody see any problems with this, will it stall my existing cycle?

thats all the questions i can think of for the moment, there will probably be more?

thanks in advance!

ok thanks, i guess it will be fine. i need to wait a few days to get a new media for it so i will see what others say.

I get about 41 litres using the dimensions you gave and assuming that all 6 sides are the same size. The sponges in a Fluval 2+ filter are the main filter media. If you clean them thoroughly, they should be re-usable. The only thought that I have about the dense white stuff in the middle is that it may be ceramic bio-media. If it is some kind of single solid item, I have no idea what it is. Ideas for the center space would be some ceramic media in a filter bag or some filter floss as a final filter.
There should be no problem running a clean 2+ in a tank as a second filter in order to get some bacteria established in it. At the very least it will help with solid wastes and will increase water circulation until you remove it.

An entire free system from the tip. That's somebody that did *not* stumble across TFF! And to your gain!

Filter floss replacement with a fresh block would be very cheap and you could go either way on the sponges, cleaning as OM says if they seem ok or replacing probably cheaply if you want to get rid of too much garbage feel or remove that last shred of risk I suppose, either way would be fine.
