Looks similar to a Juwel filter in construction.

The lefthand side probably holds the sponges that filter and act as the area for bacteria colonisation. Different porosities of sponge are used for mechanical and the bio filtration.

The water is sucked through the slits, goes through the sponges and is expelled through the impeller.

Does the heater go in the left hand gridded bit? Then the sponges in the middle. Looks a bit like my Juwel Rekord 60 set up - little pump sits at the bottom of one section, pulls water through sponges in the next door section. You could put some bio balls in a bag and out that at the bottom of the middle section then put a sponge on top. The sponge will act as the mechanical filter and get most of the solid waste out, then the bio balls will do their bacteria thing and detoxify.

what dubby said except the left hand bit is the heater housing

Thought that would be the case but was not sure. So inlet, heater, sponges, impeller then outlet, right?
