i am getting a 35 gallon hex tank. what would be better, a filter that hangs on the side of the tank or a canister filter? thanks

Canister filters can be better than hang on filters. If you get a canister you might be overfiltering that tank. That's not always a bad thing however.

Starting at about 25 gallons, I use canisters on all of my tanks. The smaller ones usually get a sponge filter although I do have a couple of HOBs. For a tank in the 30+ range, an XP1 makes a nice filter. Over about 45 gallons I go to XP2 and for a large tank I use an XP3.
