New Tank Set Up

im thinking my best bet is to get rid of the glass catfish and ember tetra. keep the neon tetra and shoal it and keep the swordtail. what do you all think of this? then what other fish could i put in?
if anyone lives near warwickshire in england and would be interested in having either of those fish, let me know

You might get away with adding a Betta/Siamese Fighting Fish. If you have an elaborate, colourful Swordtail, dont add the betta as the betta will think its another betta , and you'll have a war in your hands!

But yeah , get rid of the catfish and tetra :good:

yeah okay, well i could try that cause i REALLY wanted one. could i add other fish also? like before the fighting fish? and i will ask advice nearer the time about adding that one.
also, is there somewhere i could advertise my ember and glass for a new home? :(

Sounds like a plan. You want about 12 inches of mature fish body to stock that tank and a betta and the sword and the neon shoal would fill that out, or you could do a pair of swords with the neons. Its important to stay at a reasonably light stocking for the first couple of years of having a tank so that you will have a baseline understanding of what a successful tank feels like. If you overstock and experience problems, you never get that proper baseline "feel."

okay, yeah. would there be any other choices than the betta? just so i know. there could possibly be the option of an upgrade tank later maybe christmas aha.

You will find you can do a much more varied community in about the 30G range, than in the 12G size. But don't ever overstock your tank based on the hope of a larger tank, we've seen too many people end up losing fish over that and its painful.

You could go with a pair of Honey Gouramis instead of the swords. There are also small sparkling gouramis. There are any number of other possible centerpiece fish that don't grow too large. We have members who are great on stocking suggestions, I'm not one of them, I'm terrible at it, lol. Don't worry, they'll be along.

Take them back to the fish shop you brought them from, they would almost certainly take them back.....assuming they are both healthy.
If you explain you brought them not knowing that they weren't suitable for your particular set up, then your fish shop might even let you choose other fish in place of the 2 you brought back.

hi, i have been thinking and what would this set up of fish (introduced over a period of time) be like in my 45 litre live plant set up?

5 neon tetras

1 micro crab

1 female swordtail

2 glass catfish (if i cant get rid of the one i have)

1 bottom feeder fish (maybe two if they require a partner)

could i fit anything else in? is there any problems here, except for the glass fish? any other suggestions?

You're not listening!
You can keep Glass Catfish , thats up to you but that would be a little ignorant.
Its your choice whether you want to listen and take advice.
If you cant sell it , advertise on ebay , gumtree, aquatics classified, or donate them to a local fish shop.
Picture this

Your a glass catfish
Your alone when you shouldnt be
Your living an a home less than half the capacity than minimum
Your not being fed what you should be
You are living in a newly established aquarium, with unknown water stats, with potential deadly ammonia in the water , with none of the healthy bacteria required and found in a properly established tank.
You life is in the hands of a new aquarist who doesnt know much and isnt aware that your suffering. And even if he gets told that keeping these catfish in this tank is bad, he wants to keep you because to WANTs to because he likes you.
Your life is doomed!.
Remember your tank is only 45 litres and your fish options are limited

Im not having a go at you :hey:

i have had nothing but abuse on hear
the replys have been no help, no suggestions or anything
the other forum websites are so much better with more helpful and friendlyer people
you shouldnt be allowed fish!

You have had people giving you loads of suggestions on which fishes to add.
I really thought you were listening to advise given to you then you decide you might keep the Glass Catfish so its back to Square 1 again.
Anyway I've been reading THIS THREAD by you where, you've also been told that Glass Catfish aren't suitable , although you've also incorrectly been told to keep the catfish.
Anyway all the best for the future :good:

It strikes me that all the suggestions you have been given weren't what you wanted to hear. I don't see that as abusive. Was Byron on Tropical Fish Keeping forum abusive? He told you that you don't have room for the glass fish too.

I am new to this hobby, this forum was recommended to me, and I have always found the advice helpful and above all, accurate.

If you don't want to follow the advice of people who have knowledge and expertise far superior to yours (and mine), then fine, that's your right as a human being, but don't post unwarranted crticism of them for trying to help you - just because it wasn't what you wanted to hear.

Your tank is not cycled - read the link ive already given you and fast! Get yourself a liquid API testing kit and test your water on a daily basis - this is very important if you want to keep any of your fish alive! The good bacteria that will break down the toxins in your tank will take 6 to 8 weeks to grow before your tank will be safe and healthy for the fish! Until then you will need to be doing daily water changes to keep the toxins diluted enough not to harm the fish.

Forget anything the shop has told you cos its all rubbish! Some shops will tell you anything as they dont care about fish just profit! Dont add any more fish until your tank has fully cycled (all info in link)and keep feeding to a bare minimum until it is!

Good luck!
