I recently moved house and due to parents being stubborn, all my tanks had to be left behind :(

I'm out on my own now and I've been given around £150 as a moving gift specifically towards getting a small tropical setup. I know I want have a giant tank at that price and the tank obviously won't be as big as my older setups.

I'm guessing it will be around the 15G (UK) mark and I'm wondering what to put in this smaller setup as I'm used to lobster, plec and cichlid based tanks rather than building a small community ;) I am tempted to perhaps get a group of dwarf puffers for something different or maybe just a small general community with perhaps a betta as a "display" fish.

Any thoughts?

Just an idea, but why don't you see if you can pick up a cheap second hand tank. Used juwel rio 180's go for about £100 with cabinet. That still leaves you £50 to stock your tank......This is just an example. Many other tanks are out ther for the taking.

I would agree with the others, a larger second hand tank will give you more options for tank stocking. Plus, you'll save on cash.

lots of cheap deals to be found on the net, have a look around for second hand ones.as for your stocking, cichlids will go nice, if your after something different, dwarf puffers are ace, in a 15 gallon, you could pobally have 3, a lot of room for 3 small fish, but with plenty of caves, rocks and plants, teratorrie can be made and less aggression will occur.i have the one in a 5 gallon, and it does great. read up about them on the net and from books.as for a small community, have a look around for what fish you like the look of, jot down their names and look them up.

I'm a fool and forgot to think about 2nd hand stuff *headdesks*! A lot of the problems with 2nd hand though are the fact that we have no transport at all here and a lot of people are unwilling to deliver... it also means it gets difficult going to look at said tanks.

I will have to negotiate tank size with housemates also... I highly doubt one would appreciate coming home from a weekend away to a 100 gallon tank in the front room :p

I think 2nd hand is probably best for you, what do you think is the biggest you could get away with?

When I read the first post I thought your parenst had chucked you out, I understand it now though lol

I got a 180g with cabinet (no hood) with eheim 2217 for £80 :D

I've not had much luck so far - I can't really travel to get a tank as neither myself nor my housemates own a car so having to rely on friends for anything big that needs transport ^^; parents cant help either as I now live over 100 miles away from where I previously did.

I think size wise the biggest I could get away with is 4ft in length.
