are you gonna put both filters in the new tank?

I upgraded from a 3ft tank to a huge 250L. I ran a new external filter ( with extra sponges in the empty compartments for extra media) in my old 3 footer for 2 months (I had an undergravel filter) . Then I put new gravel and fresh water in the new tank - ran it for 24 hours with the heater on to get it to the correct temp then transferred the new filter plus plants fish and all over. Got just a small mini cycle bloom of slightly cloudy water for a couple of days which cleared.

Think I did it right - tested the water every day for a week and readings were perfect! You should also be able to take the sponges and media from your old filter out and add that to the new filter as well and it should be ready to go if its been going for a month!

Thanks Gilli ive put the filter in the new tank gunna let it run for a week now without the fish see what happens

I wouldnt do that - you need to feed the bacteria and if the tank is ultra clean then theres not going to be any food or waste in there in there! If you have a lot of fish and you are worried then add say half a dozen then more in a few days etc. You can test your water daily to make sure all is well.

i never evan realised that would it be easier to add the old filter media to the new filter only reason i want to do it this way is cos i dont have the room to be running two tanks .

I upgraded from a 20 uk gal to a 48 uk gal a few months back.i had a new external, put the cycled media from the smaller tank into the new external.obviously the day before i had set up the new tank with substrate, plants heater etc,so it just meant adding the seeded external and fish and it was done,
Has i didn't add any new fish for 2 weeks it kept up with the bio load it had in the smaller tank and i didn't get any mini cycles :)

well ive set up the new tank it has the gravel and heater in and other small touches, but the water is cloudy :/ but i was going to leave the tank untill monday so it heats up and wat not then wash the mature media in the new tank and then put it into the new filter and hopefully all should be ok :)
