Hi

I have a 4 foot 30 gallon fish tank set up with coral sand and slate stones. I am currently cycling the tank however ever since I started the cichlid project I have received conflicting information.

Is my set up big enough for malawi mbunas (mainly electric yellows)?

If not can anyone please suggest what african cichlids would be suited to my current set up?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

I guess people have kept yellow labs and saulosi (If I remember right) in small tanks like that. I'm not fond of a small tank for mbuna.

Oh they weren't kept together as it sounds. Only one species in the tank :)

If it is indeed a 4-ft, it's probably a breeder tank, they tend to be long a shallow. :good: In that case I'd say a saulosi or lab species tank would work well. I'd start out with 1m/3-4 female of either species (as kj said don't mix species). Or you could do a nice tanganikya set up.

dthoffset and KJ thank you for your comments - following your advice I have decided to read up a bit more on a tanganikya set up, I have recently checked my PH and due to the coral sand it has raised to a level suited to tanganikya.

thanks once again

Off-topic stuff removed - lets get back to the point on this one.

Personally i would also reccommend a Lake T setup - your tank size really limits your options for Mbuna. You will have much more choice with Tanganyikans. :good:

Hi Ferris

Cheers for the advice - for some reason I have always dismissed tanganyika cichlids (mainly because I can't pronounce the lakes name). I went to a few fish shops in my area today that stock cichlids from this lake and I have become fond of Neo. Leleupi and the Julid. Ornatus. Can these fish be put together in my tank and if so how many can I put in there?

Apologies to all for going off subject - (especially Jim Mature)
