I've got a pair of Bolivians in my 20 long, and i just adore them, such personality. I got the cardinal school for dithers, but if i had it to do over i'd get something less shy, like dwarf neon rainbowfish, or harlequins. The cardinals hide a little more than i like.

I've heard that rams are a bit hard to care for, with not overfeeding, and you have to be really careful w/ water param.s

Blue rams are supposed to be pretty finicky, yes, but the Bolivians are quite hardy and much less picky about water parameters.

You should be able to set up a nice African cichlid tank in a 20long. They are small and colorful fish and not too picky about water parameters.
