Hi all,

I'm thinking of changing my substrate. At the moment it's around 2'' of Aquagrit and I can't complain about the plant growth since I got it. It's just that I'm getting a bit tired of the look (and colour) of it. I'd lose about half of the Aquagrit, then top up with the new stuff. I have Cardinal Tetras and Harlequin Rasboras and I'm sure they'd look sensational given a darker substrate. Obviously things like EcoComplete are very popular, but I'm not keen on the black look. Is it really that dark 'in the flesh', or is it a bit lighter than that. The tank is well planted, but I don't have anything that's difficult to grow (I use Tropica TPN, too). I've been looking at the Red Sea substrates, too. Any experiences/suggestions?. Thanks.

Just bought a bag of eco-complete, and it is VERY dark in the flesh. If you want something a bit more colourful have a look at Aquamedic's Volcanit, this is similar but contains red 'zeolith' (aka laterite) as well but none of the bacteria or blackwater tonic etc of Eco-complete and is shipped dry.
