This tank has been in the planning stages for a while now but I finally got the manifold finished for the new 45 gallon river tank last week:

I was going to go with the two twin intakes but changed my mind before it went into the tank.

I have also mounted one powerhead slightly higher than the other to get the flow from the back one above the bogwood that I am planning on putting in there:

The manifold in place in the river tank after the minor modification.

I ended up going with three straight intakes using the filter cartridges with sponges inside rather than sponges sat over the pipe.

I then added some cobbles and bogwood

Finally got fish into the river tank today

I moved some bogwood and plants out of the two river tanks that are getting stripped down.

And this is the almost end result, there are some more plants coming later this week

Firstly without powerheads on

Gorgeous tank Mad Duff and loaches....
Sorry, are you the bloke off LOL who did the original (or at least most popular) river tank manifold post?
Either way wicked!!!! I am severely jealous.
I'd love to do a proper manifold but at the moment am stuck with an internal and external canister over filtering....
Anyhow, Lovely! Stunning to see a tank prepared with loaches in mind rather than seeing them added as an afterthought.
Much Respect.
Ps; mild hijack; what plants would you reccomend for a river tank (or pitiful attempt) i'm stuck with java fern, java fern 'windelov' and sword vallis.
I could go on with questions for ages but i'll leave it at that for now.
Edited to add; Paul if you mean the main pic and i'm not missing it, that fish is not a pleco!

Great tank there, i was just looking at that river tank on the loaches website the other day wishing i could be bothered to try and build that manifold and make hillstream loach tank. I'm sure the loaches will appreciate it greatly, keep up the great posts.

Thanks for the great comments :)

stang1 - I will be adding some more Hillstream loaches soon and may well be adding a shoal of dithers but have yet to decide which ones.

paul_219 - The fish are Hillstream Loaches, the ones pictured are 1,2 & 3 - Gastromyzon scitulus, 4 - Gastromyzon stellatus and 5 - Sewellia sp.'spotted'

-germ- - I am on LOL but I cant take credit for the original manifold idea, that was Martin Thoene :) . As far as plants go I have Java fern, java moss and Anubias barteri var. nana and Anubias barteri var. angustifolia, I will be adding a couple of hair grass which seem to do well in there and some vallis later this week

Try a shoal of white clouds... there awesome little guys IMO, and practically impossible to kill accidentaly(you know whati mean)..

Umm...
Probably way off but i think otocinclus are ideal, from what little i (think i) know they have quite similar requirements to Hillies....
Excellent fish and a little different when compared to your typical river stream set up fish.
Got a shoal in my hillie tank and they are brilliant to watch in the flow, loads of activity, not shy and nice looking fish...
:dunno:
Edited; cheers for the plant ideas...

The Hillstream Loaches are lovely little things. I hope you keep us updated with photos on how the tank and inhabitants progress. ;)

Lovely Hillstreams and a great looking tank and environment for them. Really like the last pic of the swimming hillie.

great tank and fish as always.
Duffman stirkes again, oh yeah! :good:

thats brilliant! i've always wanted to set up a river tank. you stocking it with just hill stream loaches? or are you putting a shoal of white clouds in too?

if you're lucky, the hill stream's will breeeeeeeed! :good: lol

Thanks again for the great comments :)

I have added some pictures of the tanks residents

-germ- - I don't want anything else in there that will feed on the algae, I setting up another river style tank soon but a bit smaller and I may well go with Otto's in that one ;)

pinkdolphin_113 - Primarily it will be just species of Hillstream loach but I may add a small shoal of something like Chela dadiburjori or Tanichthys micagemmae allthough I am not 100% certain yet.

I am hoping they will breed, I have already had the Pseudogastromyzon cheni some of which were bred by a friend spawn but I had Amano shrimp in their old tank and I suspect these made a meal of the fry, the Alpha male has already been digging spawning pits so with a bit of luck I might see some fry soon. I also have some young Sewellia lineolata in there which were also bred by a friend. I am hoping that if one species start to spawn it may get the others going.

Jealous as hell but good man...
Have you ever bred the sinogastromyzon wui? Are all hillies breeding behaviour assumed to be similar to this?
One of my beaufortia kweichowensis appeared to be digging spawning pits a while ago (certainly looked like it) but nothing ever came of it.
