Sorry to be so ignorant as to the labeling of Plecs. I have never been into Plecs. so to speak, but I'm curious to know about the "L" numbers. Is this the only way to differentiate between different species of Plecs. Are they waiting to be given proper identification and nomaclature, hence the "L". Please enlighten me.

thats exactly it ;)
but the L-numbers then stick and we carry on using them :)

Hey bunjiweb, that's a beautiful specimen :) ! And looks like a lovely size too - how big ?
I have one of those too, and though it hides a fair bit it's a lovely fish

hes between 2.5 and 3"

As for the L numbering system, "L" denotes to Loricariidae the lating name for the Pleco species.

The numbers are given as they are found, and it is unlikely that most species will get a common name as the range and diversity is so great!

Thanks to all others for their comments!
