I think it would look great by your computer but I think you may have some algae problems.

Thats what I'm starting to think... I tend to keep the left curtain closed in the day. My Rio180 is just to the left of the desk against the wall and gets some direct sunlight in the evening. I'm thinking as the days are drawing in, and as the sun is less prominent I might get away with it... Hopefully.

If not, I can put it on the other side of the room, but I was hoping for a little slice of calm just in eye shot ;)

RE the shrimps - I think these are very intolerant to nitrIte - with enough well growing plants this should not be a problem. If you can nick some mature filter media from elsewhere then the likelihood of nitrIte build up to any degree (with light enough fish levels initially) will be negligible.

your right but its not just that, shrimp love algae and its just not present in a newly set up tank, plus they also need stability during the initial set up phase this doesn't occur and they are put under unfair amounts of stress. changes in water are detrimental to the extreme this is as i understand the main reason shrimp need to be introduced last.

Ok, well I'm not going to populate the tank untill its cycled, and even then I won't be adding shrimp for some time :) I need to figure out the best fish for this setup now. Maybe celestials (captive bred) or micro rasboras if I can source some. Any suggestions?

Many EI people put some shrimp and oto's into new tanks unless I am mistakenly reading loads of things wrong....but anyhow, that's a different discussion.

Nice link, thanks :)

I quite like Zebra Rasbora "Microrasbora erythromicron" and Phoenix Rasbora "Boraras merah" I might make a trip to my good LFS and see if he can order things for me as he seems to carry the same fish a lot. Still, he sells Pentazona barbs so thats cool ;)

That has been the case in my two EI tanks. I have had no problems introducing them in to a new set up. My 120l tank was barely a week old when I introduced the Amano shrimp, closely followed by Otos. I waited about a month with the second tank because I was using ADA Aqua Soil, and it gives off a huge ammonia spike.

Dave.

For interests sake TriMar sell one or two of the dwarf fish, I got my maculatus from them, £1 each for 7 fish and £10 delivery :) They seem to stock galaxy rasbora most of the time aswell, they had some offers on last time I looked, 10 for £25. www.trimar.co.uk

I've always been a bit hesitant about ordering fish through the post, but people seem to think TriMar do a good job. I'd have to book a day off to make sure they arrived safe and the like :)

I'll consider it closer to when the tank is ready for stock :)

Well, my cheap as chips "luminaire" seems to be doing the trick. I just got a PM offering to buy it if I ever sold it! I don't think its actually worth anything (other than the light) but nice to think someone thinks its good enough to buy!

A new business venture maybe... ;)

My AE order arrived today! Just been fiddling about washing the tank, putting the Eco-Complete in and arranging rocks.

Little unsure on the rock positioning. I think the rock on the right in the foreground is a little overpowering. Thoughts?

agreed, maybe it should be further back or somewhere where its sympathetic to the small ones?
