New Mollies!

I got myself 2 new dalmation mollies this moring :d:D:d:D

How do i tell what ones a male and which is a female ?

They do look diffrent one has a longer anal fin ...It's like it's got 3 fin's there one is largrer than the other 2 is this male or female ?

Ha da wee browse but can't really see anything about it ! lol

They seem to be settling in well my gourami has came out of his hiding place to nose about :D

someone seems to have ignored the fact that mollies should have brackish water...

and just to say that I'm not being harsh or anything, I have kept mollies in both - in FW they became sickly within months and died, without breeding once - whereas in brackish they have bred many times and none of the parents have died so far...

i have kept mollies in freshwater with very little problem and they have happily bred, 2 would be fine, the more females the better really will put less stress on each individual :good:

The male may not be harassing her now but when it is time for the fry to drop and for some time after male mollies can be relentless, even going so far as to kill the female. you should definitely get more females. It doesn't really matter how many (except that more females equals more babies LOL) as long as there are at least 2 (preferably more) females per male.

[Edit] In regard to the question of brackish or not, I have done both with pretty much identical results. The Mollies I have now do have a little salt in their water (I wouldn't exactly call it brackish) and I've noticed after water changes when i add more salt they go down to the bottom where the salt has fallen and kind of 'dance around' in it as it dissolves...they seem to enjoy it. It does limit the types of fish that you can add and they seem to do fine without it as most have been kept in straight freshwater all/most of their lives.

Only reason i put them in without looking them up was because my grandad had mollies in the tank i have now with discus had them for over a year until he got rid of the tank + it's inhabitants due to ill health

If they can live in his they can live it mine lol

Hopefully get some new ones on sat and hopefully get soem pics up tonight once it get s a bit dark :D
