I have a 3-4" Blue Johannii/Blue Mbuna currently occupying a 20gal (US) tank with a pleco and rocks. I have had this guy for ~1.5yrs and the tank is sort of blah. So I think I would like to upgrade to something in the 55gal (US) region and do something nice with my pretty little jerk fish, adding some vegetation and a few other fish perhaps.

I was hoping to get some recommendations of some fish that will work well with my Blue Johannii, and maybe some vegetation that they would like. I was thinking about adding a female to the new tank. Also, since he is a jerk fish, would they have to be of equal size when I add them, or if I have sufficient hiding places should they be fine smaller?

I am new to Cichlid tanks, but I have had Cichlids solo at various points in time. I typically go for the less aggressive fish, so this will be a new experience.

The general rule of thumb i THINK is to keep them around the same size to avoid one fish intimidating the smaller one and keeping the food from the smaller fish. Again I THINK so please don't quote me on this. but i have had success putting smaller fish with larger fish. I put my small fish in first though. I figured that way they could explore the tank, learn the layout, find hiding places, and stake a territory by the time i put the larger fish in. It seems to have worked and i have no problems with my large fish picking on my smaller fish.
