Picked these two up yesterday and rather pleased with them to say the least!

They're a bit stressed, pics weren't taken much after getting them settled. Will get better ones soon..

Beautiful fish. I tank it the top one is a baby and the bottom one is how big? Very cool to see the tiny red spots on the baby.
Thanks for sharing. I have a baby right now, a rotkeil, so interesting to watch the changes in color and size.

Thanks, hopefully these will have some rotkeil companions in the not too distant future :)

Size wise the little one is 4" ish and the big ones 8" maybe a bit more :good:

Very nice same as my Sev :) Where did you get them from?

It looks like you have two males but not sure on the small one but the big one certainly is a male :)

Am I right on thinking they are Atabapo then? Thought I'd seen one somewhere else recently but couldn't think where. I got them from a guy on AC, he has quite a few that he wants to clear out to start up in marine keeping instead.
Been kicking myself all day for not getting more, I'm really tempted to drive back down and get another couple

How do you sex them then?

Usually males have spots/freckles on their gill plates and their red stripes cover all of their sides where as females dont usually have full gill spots and their red patterns usually stay closer to their bellys.

Hmm shall be having a search on AQ haha!!

I guessed both as females. The larger fish doesn't have anywhere near enough spotting on the gill cases to make me think it's a male at first look. Although it can be really difficult to tell, and the gill case markings are not 100% accurate. Different strains of sev have very different markings and it's so much easier if you can see a batch of the same strain to pick out the males and females.

Here's my male, to give an idea of what I expect on the gill cases and face of a typical male green sev.

Here's my rottie female's face, completely free of markings apart from, yes, a few spots on the rear of the gill cases.

True Heros Severus dont get as many spots on their faces as Efactious (spelling), Rotkiel or others just simply freckling on the gill plates this is my male Riley

and my old female :(

you can see on the second picture what I mean about the red spot markings around the belly rather than all the way up the sides like in the male.

Very nice severums there though Hamfist :) with good wide bars and a lot of blue in his face I would guess that your male green is not far removed from wild stock and at a guess either Tapajo blood or Belum, though Im counting either 6 or 7 bars on there so possibly more likley Tapajo as Belums typically only have 5 or 6 very nice :)

Well going off the colouration idea I would say the small one could possibly be female....fingers crossed.

The Large one seems to have settled in really well to say the least. He's currently swimming up and down in the filter current and doing loop the loops when he reaches the end of the tank  I've never seen a severum so active and playful :hyper:

Well, I'm really not familar with the true H.severus. Was just judging on normal H.efasciatus "rules"

Whatever, still both lovely sevs. I can see how the orange bars up the side link up with Wills pair

Wills ... thanks for your comments on Mr Jeeves (my male sev). THe pic really does not do him justice. In the right light, his colours are truly stunning.

Euston .. sounds like the big chap is a right old character !!!!!!!!

Hamfist- he is nuts! I've spent a good hour and still going messing on the computer whilst laughing at him playing around
