Edit: Well nevermind... looks like he is not going to make it. I am taking him back to the store since he was obviously sick. Going to do a partial water change and treat the tank. Hopefully my other fish don't get whatever he had.

I just got some guppies and one of them seems to have a bit of an issue. After I acclimated them all day yesterday I popped them into the tank and then had to leave. I didn't get a very good look at them until today.

Well one of the new guppies appears to be missing his top lip. At first I panicked since I thought my water parameters might have been bad and caused this but everything looks fine on my end. No ammonia, PH is normal and only .2 points off what the stores water was plus I acclimated them to my water for quite awhile before putting them in the tank. So I pulled him out and put him in a little observation bowl so I could get a closer look and it almost looks like an injury possibly attacked by another fish or maybe some sort of fungus. As for the possibility of an injury it could be old since the only things I have in my tank are two cory catfish and the other three guppies all of which are very passive fish. Worrying that it could be a fungus I went ahead and treated the tank with Nox-Ich which takes care of external parasites.

Now my real concern. His fins look great and he swims around however, he spends a lot of time skimming the top of the water with his missing lip area. He isn't just floating lethargically he is actively swimming and doesn't appear to be unhealthy except for the obvious missing lip. I also don't know if this is affecting his eating, I only noticed it after I fed them this morning, and didn't want to overfeed them just to see if he was. I will feed them again tonight and will be able to monitor if he is eating or not.

So has anyone heard of this happening and if so will his top lip grow back. I really don't want to take him back to the fish store since I'm sure they would most likely just let him die or kill him, but I also don't want him to suffer from not eating if that is the case. Any advice would be appreciated.

Bless him.
So the lip not rotting away. As fish can get mouth rot which is columnaris.
it could be an injury.
Is he still able to eat.

Any redness or swelling to the mouth area.
Any fluffy cotton wool on mouth, or cotton strands.
Does the mouth area look white, or bleached out.
make sure there not rotting around the face and head of the fish.

He didn't make it... poor little guy. The area of the mouth did look white, but not fuzzy. Now I'm worried about the other fish catching something so I am keeping a close eye on them. When he died his gills ended up looking reddish so now I am concerned about disease.

Water changes for the next few days.

it sounds like columnaris which rotted the mouth area away.
Bless Him. R.I.P.
Check water stats as red gills can be bad water quality, gill flukes, bacterial gill rot.
