I have had my tank stocked minimally for about six months anticipating a move across the house and not wanting to stress any more fish than necessary. Now that the tank is in it's new location I went to the local mom and pop lfs and chatted with them and decided to get a variety of Gourami's (honey, opaline and pearl). I brought them home Saturday and followed the adjusting them to my water instructions. Sunday morning one of the Honey Gourami's was sitting on the bottom of the tank and died a few hours later. I brought him and a water sample back to the lfs and when they tested my water they said "WOW your water is perfect" and gave me a replacement Honey Gourami.

This morning the opaline Gourami was sitting on the bottom of the tank and died a few hours later. He was the most active one in the tank last night and ate well. I haven't seen any agression and there are a few places for them to hide.

Here's the stats:
55 gal
Marineland Magnum Canister filter
Cycled for more than two years
weekly 20% water change and gravel vac.
I don't have the chemistry info handy but everything was within "Normal" range when I tested it and when the lfs tested it.

Gourami Tankmates:
Pleco 6"
Pictus Cat 4"
Iridescent Shark 4"

I plan on calling them later to see what they think but another opinion is always good.

How long to you climatise them for.
Ask the lfs how long they have had the gouramis.
Could be stress due to the move.
Did the gouramis darken in colour.

I floated them for 15min, then added my tank water waited another 15 min, then put them in the tank. Car ride home was 10-15 minutes.

I'll ask them how long they've had them when I call.

This one didn't look dark. The other one looked dark when he came out of the cave and quickly changed back to normal color.

Gouramis are prone to bacterial infections, darkening in colour is a sign of a bacteria infection.

Could I treat the remaining Gourami's with antibacterial food? I could set up my 10 gal as a quarantine but it would be really cramped. I would be very nervous about putting any kind of medication in the 55 gal for fear of killing the good bacteria or harming the other fish. I've heard melafix won't kill the good bacteria, have you had any experience with that?

Thanks for all your help!!

Treat with the food then.
Melafix has it uses more an external bacteria med than internal.
No it wouldn't touch your bacteria colony.

Thanks for your help, hopefully I can save the remaining Gourami's.
